Nordic Walking

This is walking with a difference! Nordic walkers use long poles like ski sticks to help push them forwards. This method ensures that both upper body and leg muscles are used. It’s the perfect way to burn calories and discover breath-taking scenery, all at the same time.

Why is it good for me?

Scientific evidence suggests that Nordic walking has health benefits beyond those of regular walking. It provides greater total body workout because the arms and upper body are being exercised by the poles. Similarly Nordic walking increases cardiac fitness workout from 8% to 23%.

Other important benefits include:

  • Reduction in pressure on knees and joints
  • Soothing of shoulder, neck and back problems
  • Boosts wellbeing and reduces stress
What equipment do I need?

The most important equipment for Nordic walkers are poles and footwear. Poles tend to cost around £25 – £60, whilst footwear will be dependent how much you would like to spend. If the poles or shoes are not quite right, then this can make your walk a little less effective.

Where can I do it?

Nordic walking can be done anywhere. However, if you like a challenge then try going up and down rough terrains. Try walking in a group for fun or solo walks can be a great way to unwind.
